Bamboo and Sorona® have become key fibers in WvG’s new generation of knits. Sorona®, a partially plant-based PTT developed by Covation Biomaterials, accounts for 37 percent renewable content. Combined with bamboo viscose, the result is a fabric that breathes, stretches, and lasts in ways that traditional polyester blends cannot match.
What Is Sorona®?
Sorona® is a PTT (polytrimethylene terephthalate) fiber derived partly from industrially fermented plant sugars. Unlike standard polyester (PET), which is entirely petroleum-based, Sorona® incorporates bio-based monomers that improve flexibility and softness. This molecular difference gives Sorona® its natural stretch recovery and smoother hand.
In testing, Sorona® shows better resilience and colorfastness than PET. The fiber structure has a helical coil, which helps garments recover shape after wear. It also resists static buildup and wicks moisture efficiently, creating a drier, cooler fabric environment.
Why We Pair It With Bamboo
Bamboo viscose complements Sorona®’s structure. The cellulose content in bamboo provides breathability and cooling, while Sorona® reinforces elasticity and strength. Bamboo alone can drape beautifully but may bag or lose shape over time. By adding Sorona®, the knit retains its form and gains subtle stretch without synthetic stiffness.
The blend feels smooth, cool, and soft from the first wear. In warm weather, it moves moisture away from the skin. In cooler months, it layers easily under heavier knits.
Italian Production and Fabric Evolution
All WvG Bamboo + Sorona® knits are produced near Como, Italy. Our current program uses improved twist control and a denser knit than the 2016 run, resulting in better shape retention and reduced surface fuzz. Italian finishing also improves color depth and handfeel.
The yarns are spun on precision machinery in small runs, ensuring consistency across every production batch. These improvements mean that 2025’s Sorona® tees have a cleaner line, smoother drape, and longer lifespan than earlier generations.
Community and Real-World Feedback
WvG’s original Bamboo/Sorona® line earned strong responses from Reddit and long-term customers for softness, breathability, and value. Wear tests from multiple seasons confirmed that the fabric resists pilling, holds shape through repeated washes, and maintains its feel longer than most cotton-poly blends.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Sorona® the same as polyester? No. Sorona® is a PTT fiber with a different chemical structure from PET. It contains 37 percent plant-based content and has higher elasticity, recovery, and softness.
Will Sorona® pill? Pilling resistance depends on ply and construction. The high-twist Italian yarns used by WvG reduce surface friction and help the knit stay smooth.
Why It Matters
Bamboo and Sorona® represent a functional evolution in knitwear. They combine sustainability, comfort, and durability in a single platform. The 37 percent bio-based content of Sorona® reduces dependency on petroleum without sacrificing performance.
At WvG, these fibers are engineered for longevity, not marketing. Every tee reflects measurable technical improvement and Italian textile expertise.
