Escorial wool is one of the rarest luxury wools in the world, but rarity is only a small part of what makes it interesting.
It comes from an extremely limited population of sheep with a bloodline stretching back centuries. The fiber is generally around 15 to 16 microns, but unlike conventional Merino, Escorial has an unusually curly, three-dimensional helical structure that gives it extraordinary loft, elasticity and recovery.
Peter Radford of the Escorial Group has a much simpler way of describing the result:
“Warmth without weight.”
I originally started researching Escorial because Wolf vs Goat is going to be working with the fiber. What began as research for a few garments turned into a much bigger rabbit hole.
I’ve now had multiple conversations with the people directly involved in Escorial, including Robert on the woven-fabric side and several hours of conversations with Peter Radford and Olivia at the Escorial Group.
I wanted to understand where Escorial actually came from, why it is so rare, what makes it different from Merino, and whether some of the claims repeated online are actually true.
What I discovered is that micron is probably the least interesting part of the story.
What is Escorial wool?
Escorial is an exceptionally fine wool produced from a very small and carefully maintained population of sheep in Australia and New Zealand.
But calling it simply a “superfine Merino” misses much of what makes the fiber unusual.
Escorial has a distinctive three-dimensional crimp structure sometimes described as an alternating helix. Rather than behaving like a relatively flat wave, the fiber curls through three dimensions almost like a tiny spring.
That structure gives Escorial its characteristic loft, elasticity, recovery and ability to trap air.
It is also one of the reasons Escorial can provide significant warmth without requiring a heavy garment.
And unlike a generic fiber classification, Escorial is a controlled name. The Escorial Group oversees the selection and supply chain of genuine Escorial wool.
Not every fine wool from an Escorial sheep automatically qualifies as Escorial.
That becomes important later.
Where does Escorial wool come from?
The history of Escorial begins long before New Zealand or Australia.
According to historical information provided to me by the Escorial Group, the story begins with sheep originating in the Maghreb of North Africa and eventually reaching Spain.
By the 15th century, selected flocks were in the possession of Spanish royalty.
During the following century, King Philip II built the palace and monastery of El Escorial outside Madrid. A flock was maintained on the surrounding royal grounds, creating the association with the Escorial name.
The wool became highly prized for exceptionally fine cloth, and Spain closely guarded these valuable sheep.
Then, in 1765, King Charles of Spain gifted 100 sheep to his cousin, the Elector of Saxony.
Those animals became part of the foundation of the superfine Saxon flocks that would become famous throughout Europe.
How Escorial wool reached Tasmania
The next major part of the story involves Eliza Furlong.
In the early 19th century, Furlong traveled through Saxony selecting exceptionally fine sheep.
The exact chronology varies depending on the historical account, but the Escorial Group’s history describes her selecting approximately 120 of the best sheep in 1829, with the family eventually bringing the bloodline to Tasmania.
There are more detailed versions involving Eliza, her sons, multiple journeys and sheep arriving over a period of time.
For our purposes, the important part is what happened afterward.
The old bloodline survived in Tasmania.
That preservation eventually created the opportunity for a young New Zealand farmer named Peter Radford to encounter the sheep.
Peter Radford and modern Escorial wool
Peter’s relationship with these sheep began in 1967 when he received a farm scholarship to Tasmania.
That encounter eventually became a relationship lasting nearly sixty years.
Peter became increasingly interested in the unusual wool these small sheep produced and eventually helped establish a significant Escorial population in New Zealand.
Part of that work involved an embryo-transfer program.
According to Peter, five ewes connected to the Winton bloodline were used. Approximately 140 embryos were obtained, with roughly 110 recipient ewes involved.
This allowed the genetic population to expand without simply crossing the animals with other sheep to increase numbers.
That distinction tells you quite a lot about the philosophy behind modern Escorial.
The objective was not simply to make more sheep.
It was to preserve the sheep they already had.

The Escorial Group and protecting the fiber
The Escorial Company was founded in New Zealand in 1998 to protect and promote Escorial as a distinctive fiber and preserve its provenance.
When we talk about Escorial today, we’re actually talking about several interconnected things:
The historical bloodline.
The sheep.
The unusual physical structure of their wool.
A proprietary selection process.
A controlled manufacturing and supply chain.
And the Escorial name itself.
So Escorial is not simply another term for extremely fine Merino wool.
The fiber has to qualify.
How rare is Escorial wool?
Extremely rare.
There are only a small number of Escorial sheep in Australia and New Zealand.
But the number of sheep only tells half the story.
Escorial is actually made scarce twice.
First, you begin with an extraordinarily limited population of animals capable of growing the wool.
Then you shear them.
And another selection process begins.
Approximately 20 tonnes of raw Escorial fiber are selected annually.
The important word is selected.
That number does not represent the entire annual wool clip of all Escorial sheep.
Not every fleece automatically becomes Escorial.
Not every section of every fleece becomes Escorial either.
The wool is evaluated using a proprietary selection methodology combining hand, touch and visual inspection with objective measurements, including fiber curvature.
Only the fiber displaying the required Escorial characteristics remains within the Escorial program.
So the scarcity happens twice.
First with the sheep.
Then with the wool.
Escorial growers are paid a premium
There is an important economic component to preserving a rare animal.
According to Peter, Escorial growers receive roughly twice the market price for conventional Merino wool.
That matters because an Escorial sheep produces considerably less wool.
Peter told me an Escorial sheep typically produces approximately 2.3 to 2.8 kilograms of wool per clip.
A conventional Merino may produce roughly 6 to 7 kilograms.
Imagine being the farmer.
If you are paid by the kilogram, breeding an animal that grows substantially more wool makes perfect economic sense.
Escorial asks its growers to do something different.
Maintain the bloodline.
Maintain the characteristics of the fiber.
Accept a smaller clip.
And resist breeding solely for greater production.
Paying growers a substantial premium helps make that preservation economically viable.
I think that is an important part of sustainability that often gets ignored.
If we want farmers to preserve something rare, preservation ultimately has to make financial sense for the farmer.
Escorial wool vs. Merino wool
This is where things get really interesting.
The biggest difference between Escorial and conventional Merino is not simply micron.
It is structure.
We have become obsessed with micron as a measurement of luxury wool.
Seventeen microns is good.
Sixteen must be better.
Fifteen is better still.
Therefore, twelve must be incredible.
Except fiber doesn’t work that way.
Micron tells us the diameter of an individual fiber.
It does not tell us the shape of that fiber.
And Escorial has a very unusual shape.
Why Escorial wool is so curly
Escorial’s defining characteristic is an unusually pronounced three-dimensional crimp.
The technical description is an alternating helix.
The easier description?
It is really, really curly wool.
Peter told me that Escorial is approximately three to four times curlier than Saxon wool.
Think about straight hair compared with tightly curled hair.
The curly hair occupies more three-dimensional space.
It creates air pockets.
Compress it and it wants to spring back.
Escorial behaves similarly.
That curl creates loft and gives the fiber a natural ability to recover after compression.
This is where Peter’s description starts making sense:
Warmth without weight.
Why Escorial wool is warm without being heavy
The highly curled fibers naturally create space.
That space traps air.
And trapped air provides insulation.
I think of it somewhat like down and fill power.
With down, we care about how much volume a particular amount of material can occupy and how much insulating air it can trap.
Escorial works on a similar basic principle.
Its extreme curl allows a relatively small amount of fiber to occupy a comparatively large amount of space.
The spring-like structure also contributes to elasticity, wrinkle recovery, resilience, drape and shape retention.
Compress the fiber and it wants to recover.
This is why two wools with nearly identical micron measurements can behave very differently in a finished garment.
Micron matters.
Geometry matters too.
How fine is Escorial wool?
This was one of the first questions I wanted Peter to answer because I had seen claims online about 12-micron Escorial.
Peter was very clear with me.
That is not what they are trying to produce.
The Escorial selected by the program is generally between 15 and 16 microns.
Could an individual fiber or animal potentially test finer?
Yes.
But that is different from saying Escorial is commercially produced as a 12-micron wool.
More importantly, Peter does not believe chasing the smallest possible micron number is necessarily good for the sheep or the fiber.
The goal is not to make today’s Escorial finer than yesterday’s Escorial.
The goal is to preserve the characteristics that make Escorial what it is.
Genetics matter as much as micron
That philosophy extends directly into breeding.
Peter told me genetic drift is carefully controlled within Escorial flocks.
They want to preserve the helix.
They want the curvature.
They want the extreme curl.
So an animal producing increasingly straight fiber is not necessarily desirable simply because the wool tests extremely fine.
The sheep themselves are selected to preserve the characteristics of Escorial from generation to generation.
The question is not simply:
“How fine is this sheep’s wool?”
It is:
“Is this sheep still producing Escorial?”
That is a very different way of thinking about fiber quality.
Escorial sheep are pasture grazed
The way the sheep live is another part of the story.
According to Peter and Olivia, Escorial sheep graze naturally on native pasture rather than being managed around a high-protein feeding program designed to push wool production or extreme fineness.
The sheep graze.
It sounds simple, but it represents a deliberate philosophy.
The animal is not being managed around producing the most impressive possible number.
The fiber is the consequence of the animal, its genetics and the environment in which it naturally lives.
The microscopic structure is different too
Peter gave me another interesting number.
According to them, Escorial has roughly 2,700 scales compared with approximately 1,500 in conventional Merino.
Combined with the extreme curl of the fiber, this helps explain why Escorial reacts differently during processing, washing and finishing.
They also told me that, in terms of curvature and composition, Escorial is closer to vicuña than conventional Merino.
That does not mean Escorial is vicuña.
It means that when considering some of the physical characteristics of the fiber, vicuña can provide a more useful comparison than treating Escorial as simply another superfine Merino.
What happens to Escorial wool that doesn’t qualify?
This was one of the questions I specifically asked.
If only selected wool becomes Escorial, what happens to everything else?
It does not simply get thrown away.
As wool moves from greasy wool through cleaning and eventually into top, only fiber meeting the Escorial specification stays within the branded Escorial program.
Fine wool falling outside those specifications can enter the broader fine-Merino market and ultimately be used in other fine wool blends.
This creates an important distinction.
An Escorial sheep can grow wool that does not ultimately get sold as Escorial.
The Escorial name follows the selected fiber, not simply the animal.
Even byproducts are being considered.
Lanolin recovered during processing is being explored for cosmetic applications, including products such as lip balm.
When you begin with a raw material this limited, finding productive uses for as much of it as possible makes sense.
Escorial wool is difficult to process
The properties that make Escorial interesting also create manufacturing problems.
When Peter initially began working with the fiber, they tried processing it using conventional worsted assumptions.
It felted.
The machinery and processes were designed around handling Merino in a particular way.
Escorial did not cooperate.
Peter later experimented with circular knitting, including early ski wear and long underwear produced in New Zealand.
Those experiments showed there was something special about the fiber.
They also showed that they had to learn how to work with it.
I love this part of the story because it gets us away from luxury marketing language.
Some of the same characteristics that make Escorial desirable also made it a pain in the ass to manufacture.
That tells you something real.
Escorial has to be knitted differently
The differences continue all the way into garment production.
Because Escorial yarn has so much natural stretch and recovery, it should be knitted at a looser tension than another yarn of a comparable count.
The additional space allows the fiber to recover.
Think again about those tiny springs.
Constrain them too much and you are fighting the characteristic that makes Escorial unusual.
Give them room and the structure can recover, creating a soft, lofty and lightweight knit.
Even the finishing process is different.
Escorial recommends a slightly alkaline final wash. If the local water is neutral or slightly acidic, its technical guidance recommends adjusting the wash accordingly.
This is the sort of detail I find much more compelling than calling something “luxurious.”
Luxury is subjective.
Having to change the way you knit and finish a yarn because the fiber physically behaves differently is not.
Why Escorial colors look different
The three-dimensional structure also affects how Escorial interacts with light.
Wool with a more planar crimp tends to reflect more light and can create greater surface luster.
Escorial behaves differently.
Its structure produces a naturally matte appearance.
But matte does not mean dull.
According to Peter, Escorial can produce incredibly rich, deep and sometimes surprisingly bright colors without relying on surface shine.
I recently received the Escorial color cards, and seeing the actual yarn makes the distinction much easier to understand.
Matte and bright sound contradictory until you realize that brightness and sheen are two different things.

How Escorial wool is traced from farm to garment
This may be my favorite part of the entire story.
Escorial maintains a controlled supply chain beginning with the growers and continuing through selection, processing, spinning, weaving and knitting.
But the traceability goes beyond paperwork.
Escorial has incorporated FibreTrace technology using markers introduced at the fiber level.
Those markers create an identifiable signature that physically travels with the material.
A scanner can detect the signature farther along the supply chain.
Think about that.
The identifying information does not simply sit on a certificate next to the wool.
The marker travels with the fiber.
That also creates a mechanism for authenticating genuine Escorial material.
QR-code traceability is coming next
Peter and Olivia told me that the next stage is making this provenance accessible to the person who actually buys the garment.
Consumer-facing traceability is being developed with IDFL in Switzerland.
The current target is late 2026 or potentially early 2027.
The idea is that a QR code or garment label will allow a customer to follow the Escorial in a product backward through the supply chain and toward the flock that produced the wool.
That is where traceability becomes incredibly interesting to me as a clothing maker.
Imagine buying a Wolf vs Goat Escorial sweater or trouser and being able to scan the garment.
Instead of reading a generic statement saying the wool was “responsibly sourced,” you can begin following the material backward.
The garment.
The fabric or yarn.
The spinner.
The selected fiber.
The farm.
The flock.
That is provenance you can actually interact with.
Wolf vs Goat x Escorial knitwear
And this is where all of this research becomes something tangible.
Wolf vs Goat is working directly with the Escorial Group on an upcoming Escorial wool knitwear collaboration.
The first project revolves around an unusual Chainlink yarn being produced in New Zealand.
The machine producing the construction is one of a kind.
Instead of creating a conventional dense yarn, the Chainlink construction produces something extremely open and airy.
Now combine that with what Escorial naturally wants to do.
The fiber is already extraordinarily curly.
It wants to occupy space.
It wants to trap air.
It wants to recover after compression.
Then we give that fiber a yarn construction specifically designed to give it even more space.
That is “warmth without weight” taken to its logical conclusion.

The WvG Escorial cardigan
Our goal is to make a substantial, chunky Wolf vs Goat Escorial cardigan.
Visually, we want it to have the presence of a serious chunky knit.
But we want the actual wearing experience to be completely different.
It should be significantly lighter than you expect when you pick it up.
And because the Escorial fiber and Chainlink construction are both designed around loft and trapped air, it should be exceptionally warm relative to that weight.
Instead of simply putting an Escorial label on a sweater, we want to build a sweater around the property that makes Escorial interesting in the first place.
Warmth without weight.
We are currently working toward having the WvG Escorial knitwear ready for the 2026 holiday and gift-giving season.

Wolf vs Goat x Escorial x The Fabricateurialist
The knitwear is only part one.
Wolf vs Goat is also developing an Escorial wool trouser in collaboration with the Escorial Group and The Fabricateurialist.
And our goal is not simply to make an expensive pair of pants.
We want to see how far we can take it.
We want to make the ultimate Escorial trouser.
Escorial has yarn available for the project, which means we have an opportunity to explore developing our own gabardine rather than simply selecting an existing cloth.
That changes the entire process.
We can begin with the garment instead of beginning with the fabric.
What should the weight be?
How should it drape?
How much recovery should it have?
How can the weave take advantage of Escorial’s natural resilience?
What should the yarn construction be?
How should the cloth be finished?
Only then do we build the trouser.
Building a garment around the fiber
The responsibilities within the collaboration make sense.
Peter, Olivia and the Escorial Group bring their knowledge of the sheep, fiber, yarn and fabric.
Wolf vs Goat will oversee the pattern, construction, sewing and production of the trouser.
The Fabricateurialist will collaborate with us on the project and its marketing.
And rather than simply putting three names on a label, the point is for each participant to contribute what they actually know.
If we move quickly enough, we are aiming for approximately Christmas 2026.
If developing the cloth correctly requires more time, we will push the release.
There is no point spending this much time learning why the material is special and then rushing the part that actually becomes the garment.
Why Wolf vs Goat is working with Escorial wool
When I began researching Escorial, I thought I was researching an expensive wool.
I was wrong.
What I was really researching was an entire philosophy of making things.
The sheep are selected around the fiber.
The genetics are managed to preserve the curl.
The farmers are paid a premium to make preservation economically viable.
The wool is selected around particular physical characteristics rather than micron alone.
The spinner has to understand how the fiber behaves.
The knitter has to change the tension.
The finishing process has to respect the fiber.
The yarn can be engineered to amplify its loft.
The supply chain follows the material back toward its origin.
That philosophy is remarkably close to the way I want Wolf vs Goat to approach clothing.
Start with the material.
Understand it.
Then make the garment around what the material does best.
Not the other way around.
What I got wrong about Escorial wool
When I started this, I thought the impressive part was going to be the micron.
It isn’t.
That may be the biggest thing I learned from Peter and Olivia.
You can make finer wool.
You can breed sheep that produce more wool.
You can breed longer staples.
You can optimize agricultural production in a hundred different ways.
Escorial is interesting because optimization isn’t necessarily the objective.
Preservation is.
The bloodline matters.
The sheep matter.
The pasture matters.
The farmer matters.
The curl matters.
The alternating helix matters.
The curvature matters.
The microscopic structure matters.
The amount of air the fiber can hold matters.
The way it recovers after compression matters.
The way it behaves during spinning matters.
The way it has to be knitted matters.
The way it has to be washed and finished matters.
The way it interacts with light and color matters.
The people who know how to process it matter.
The ability to authenticate it matters.
And being able to follow that fiber back to the flock that produced it matters.
Peter describes himself as the custodian of Escorial.
I keep coming back to that word.
Custodian.
Not inventor.
Not someone trying to redesign the sheep to meet whatever specification happens to be fashionable this decade.
A custodian takes responsibility for something that already exists.
Maybe that is the best way to understand the entire Escorial story.
The remarkable thing isn’t that somebody figured out how to improve it.
The remarkable thing is that after hundreds of years, people are still trying not to change it.
Now Wolf vs Goat gets to take its place at the other end of that chain.
Our job isn’t to change Escorial either.
It’s to understand what the fiber has been telling everyone else along the way and make the best garments we possibly can from it.
Warmth without weight.
Provenance without mythology.
And, hopefully, clothing worthy of the fiber.
That’s what we’re going to try to make.
